When are we aware of our breathing?

How do you breathe usually ? Just in and out, without thinking about breathing, you just breathe.
I used to do that, and sometimes, when I was very busy, I noticed that I would forget to breathe, and then I would take a breath.
That is the only time I would be aware of my breathing, oh and also when doing sports and running and having sex, when I was on the verge of passing out.
What else? When are we aware of our breathing?
